The Best Hiking Spots in Vernon Township

Pack your hiking boots. Whether you're here for a weekend or a longer stay, the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge and Wawayanda State Park are both just minutes from the condos, and between them they cover just about every kind of trail you'd want.

Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge

A federally protected habitat known for its diversity in plant and animal life. The wetland area runs alongside more than nine miles of the Wallkill River and is a reliable spot for frogs, salamanders, and the federally threatened bog turtle, as well as migrating birds. The refuge includes two miles of Appalachian Trail hiking, additional walking trails, cross-country skiing in winter, and good access for bird enthusiasts and wildlife photographers.

Wawayanda State Park

More than 60 miles of trails for beginners through serious hikers. Twenty miles of the Appalachian Trail runs through the park, and the summit of Wawayanda Mountain earns its views. Lake Wawayanda is open for canoeing, fishing, and cold-water swimming, with a boat launch and camping spots nearby. The park is home to red-shouldered hawks, barred owls, and great blue herons, among others.

Appalachian Trail Boardwalk to Warwick Turnpike

A nine-mile, family-friendly hike suitable for all skill levels. The route follows the Appalachian Trail for 1.5 miles along the 110-foot Pochuck Boardwalk, a wooden suspension bridge built over what was once a prehistoric lake. At the second scenic overlook, look for the mailbox built into a tree where AT hikers leave messages. The hike ends in Wawayanda State Park.
